midi zones in air. A 'D' beam from a keyboard, or a theramin wand. Proximity midi zones.

Im looking to make a midi controller. A proximity controller. Essentially, a way to cut up the proximity of an object to an electric field (or light field). As in the the Roland Theramin. You can control pitch, as you normally can, by moving your hand closer to the wand. This is cut up into midi zones. I'd like to have a fast, responsive but accurate midi trigger type event in each zone, using this method. The theramin wand is best suited for my application. Any help would be highly appreciated. I'm researching for a product to release as an MVP, if I can get the tech sorted. MAny thanks in advance! ( I have looked around and found one YT video that touches on this. There is the Alesis AirFx, but I need more of a wand type, not a dome.

How do I change two or more CC´s in a variable range by using one MIDI message?

Hi together,

i use an EDIROl PCR-500 to control my Korg Volca Sample. I formulate the MIDI messages in sysex. Up to 24 bits a message are possible. With the pitch/modulation bender i can talk to two different CC´s in time.

How do I formulate a sysex for a poti on my midicontroller which i want to let control two CC´s in a variable range.. example : change cc 43 on midi channel 1 [dt] 0 - 127 and change cc 48 on midi channel 6 [dt] 0-127.

1.) b0 2b [fixed value] b5 30 [dt] 00 - 7F works fine, but how could i tell them (b0 2b & b5 30) to use the same data input? I cant enter [dt] more than one time.

I´m searching long time now for a solution. More and more i feel lost in it.

Which Midi parameter for IOS->Preferences->general->Accessibility->Switch control?

Hi all.

Trying to assign a external midi switch as an IOS Switch control.(IOS->Preferences->general->Accessibility->Switch control)

info: https://www.imore.com/how-use-switch-control-iphone-and-ipad#new-switch

Noticing that, when using a bluetooth apple keyboard using keystrokes, the switch control works nicely.

when assigning a bluetooth midi controller button it recognizes the trigger but nothing happens when activating switch control.

Any ideas how to make this happen?

Cheers,

Layout xy pad as keyboard using Stream Byter, CC64 issue

Hello,

on the one hand I want to provide a layout with extensive use of the Stream Byter plugin, on the other hand I have also some questions. Nic from Audeonic helped me to make it work for multiple instances. Thousand thanks to Nic again, I could never have done this alone! In advance a link to the discussion on the Audeonic forum: http://audeonic.boards.net/thread/466/instances-xy-pad-notes-conversion — because if other users will ask questions, I will probably not be able to answer, as I don’t understand everything myself.

It is not a complete layout, and it is not perfect. I exported a page from my layout and duplicated the page to show two instances of it. The instances are determined by midi channel, so 16 instances would be possible.
How it works:
The idea is to play notes with a xy pad (monophonic, of course). The x-controller (CC16) makes the note number, the y-controller (CC17) velocity (and optionally channel pressure). Y creates a note off for the previous note first, and then a note on for the current note.
CC16 and CC17 have extra buttons assigned: CC18 and CC19 (hidden in play mode, because it is not meant to be used manually).
The Off-value (0) of toggle CC18 creates a note off for the last note. This can be filtered if setting the button manually to On.
CC19 is used for CC64 (hold), but only if button "Hold On/Off" (CC20) is on.
The effect is, that "hold" is created only as long as the xy-pad is touched.
And what I really like is, that you can control to a certain extent, how many notes are held. Because new notes are only created, if the value of CC17 changes. So, if you move your finger strictly horizontally (which is almost impossible), you get only a few notes, if you make curves in the movement, you get a lot.
"Hold Super" acts like a hold pedal, in a usual way.

Of course, you will easily see how it works when playing with it. But when looking at the Stream Byter rules, it might be good to know what the controls are doing.

Issues, that I am aware of:
iSEM does not like channel pressure very much. Touch Off always resets pressure to 0. This appears to be a bug in iSEM, because in SEM V2 for Mac and Windows this problem has been solved.
bs-16i interprets channel pressure as modulation.

CC 64 – this is my question
Animoog and Moog Model 15: when receiving Hold Off (CC64, value 0) from Midi Designer (and I suppose from any other software), all notes are stopped, as if they were receiving note offs. In this layout, if both buttons "CC 18 Last Note" and "Hold On/Off" are set to the On-status, the last note should still sound when releasing the xy-pad, but it is also stopped. Whereas, if CC64 is sent by a hardware controller, this is not an issue.
Korg ODYSSEi ignores CC64 completely. It accepts hold only if sent by hardware, and only if the source sends on the same midi channel as ODYSSEi is receiving. When the channel is remapped, it does not work.
Ok, ODYSSEi has many issues, I will have to live with it. But do you have any idea what the problem with Moog is?

Thanks!
Josef

The Stream Byter ruleset is also attached as text file (zip), because it is quite long.

How do get playback to respond to my tap while recording

I have set up a button and Digital Performer 9 is recording my taps while I 'conduct' my sequence. Trouble is the sequence plays at the old tempo until I stop recording, and then it plays back with the new tempo track. I suspect this is a DAW issue. DP is definitely receiving the midi info from the MidiDesigner app on my iPad. Any help appreciated.

Bit changer function in Logic Pro?

I'm replicating my Yamaha 4-OP editor in a Logic environment.

In MIDI Designer, to turn each operator on or off, there is a SysEx fader being controlled by 4 bit changers.

Pretty simple, but I have absolutely no idea how to do this in Logic (if it's at all possible?)

Any help is appreciated!

[edit: i do realize that a drop-down menu with all 16 possible configurations is more than enough, since i always have all 4 operators on anyway!]

iPad MIDI Monitor with Copy and Paste

I have to use quite some SYSEX with my tmeplate for the M3 and sometimes the learn functions issues too much data and I am looking for an iPad midi monitor who can catch SYSEX so I can modify it and copy and past to the SYSEX field in MD.

I can do it via a midi monitor on my mac and syncing the text file, but I was hoping to be able to do it all on the iPad as I can put the iPad right on my M3 and do it all there.

any recomendations anybody ?

MIDI Timeout?

I'm trying to control a Elation Stage Setter-8 lighting controller via my MIDI Designer layout, and things are working at first, but after I send each control, about 6.5 seconds later the MIDI light stops flashing on the lighting controller and its settings revert back to what it was before the MIDI command was sent (in this case, it's all note messages). If I keep sending commands, it works until 6.5 seconds after the last command is sent.

It seems like it's losing the connection and reverting back to its default values when it loses the connection. Is there a timeout to MIDI connections? Is there a way to make MIDI Designer keep that connection active? Is this even typical behavior? I've never seen this kind of thing when hooking up foot controllers to guitar effects processors, but I don't know if this is special behavior associated to the iPad, MIDI Designer, or the IK iRig MIDI I'm using. My all-purpose foot controller doesn't send note messages (which is what the lighting controller needs), so I don't have a good way of testing if it's just the way the lighting controller works.

I have an email to Elation to request info on this behavior too.. but I was also hoping to find info here too.

MIDI CC commands stutter frequently in Cubase 6/7

Hey all, I am right away aware that the following problem is NOT MIDIDesigners fault, but maybe someone here knows what it is.

Everytime I am sending e.g. CC01 via MIDIDesigner into Cubase the CC command gets recorded okay, but after a few seconds it start to stutter like hell and the curve is more like a few steps. Does anyone know what this is?

The reason I know why it is not MD fault is, because this also happens with Lemur 4 too. So I think the only problem might be either the Windows network or the WLAN router. Does anyone have a clue? Thank you!

Note On set to zero vs. Note Off

This is a MIDI question but relates to how MIDIDesigner is working with my lighting system. The lighting system can receive MIDI commands. It uses pitch for dimmer channel and velocity for dimmer intensity.

The lighting system is set to ignore Note OFF messages.

A MIDIDesigner fader set to "Note ON/Note ON" will change the dimmer channel to the specified amount in the fader. No problem there.

What I see in using MIDI Monitor, though, is that when the fader hits zero, MIDIDesigner sends a Note OFF message, rather than a Note On value of zero, and since the lighting box ignores Note OFF messages, I can't set my dimmers to zero.

So is this something MIDIDesigner does automatically? In MIDI, aren't Note On and Note Off two distinct things, even though Note On at zero and Note Off are the functional equivalent?

Wow, I just re-read this and hope someone understands the questions. For various reasons I don't want to set the lighting system to receive Note Off messages.

Thanks.

Roland MKS-30 with Johannes Hausensteiner mod - getting CC to work

"Brage" asked the following question in another category:

Hello Rainer! I know this question is not fully related to midi designer, but it's related to your specific question: I have an mks-30 with the johannes hausensteiner midi upgrade. I want to enable midi control change reception (from analog.no: '6.3. MIDI control change enable/disable flag'), but I cannot find any documentation apart from analog .no's facsimile of the intro to the midi upgrade manual. Can you please help me? I've tried every thinkable front panel button combination, yet I haven't found a page from which I can enable the mks-30 to receive/accept parameter changes via midi cc's (#'s 17-24, 33-40, 49-56 and 65-72). It would be truly fantastic if you could help.
Best regards, Brage.

I couldn't get it to work either at the beginning, and have to have a look at the machine itself to see how I did manage in the end; I'll get back to you!

The layout for MIDI Designer I'm creating for the Roland JX-3P (Organix), JX-3P (KiwiTechnics), MKS-30 (JH), JX-8P and MKS-70 is looking great btw, I'm nearly done designing it and am busy adding the SysEx params for the 8P and MKS-70. The cool thing is that every synth has its own page in only one layout, so it's very easy to switch between them, and they all have the same consistent controls, as far as possible. I'll probably be posting it somwhere next week.

Here's a preview of the JX-3P (KiwiTechnics) programmer:
