MDP2 fails to open an MD Pro-X layout

I opened an old layout in MDP PROx to verify it. I did not make any changes, but saved it. I mailed it to an interested user. He was unable to open it. He stated he was using MD Pro 2 (2.131) on IOS 10.3.3. The message is “…was created with a higher version of MD…”.

Is there any version of MDP Pro2 that can open a layout saved in MDP PROx?

Answered: In PROx, Panels with controls can be duplicated, but not with Make Similar behavior.

When first duplicating a panel with controls, the duplicate controls have the same MIDI parameters. If MIDI Receive is selected, the controls with activate each other, appearing to behave as Copies. The right answer is to offset the Channel and/or CC values in the duplicate panel(s).

Lately I have submitted several Ask a questions and get no email responses. I have the Email me checked when submitting. My active email address is listed. I have to go to Q&A periodically to check for responses to questions I just submitted. Worse yet, if someone responds to an older submittal I will never know. Please check into this.

Not a MDP2 function. You have the iPad Accessibility / Hover Text function turned on. Turn it off. Or change where it displays.

Button sub controls don't toggle properly when sending MIDI CC#'s (MDP2 Mac)

Exact functionality works on iOS but doesn't seem to work on Mac.

I need the buttons to light up as they hide/unhide their respective panel and send midi CC along with a specific midi value. It works if I change the message type don't send midi, but the minute I change the message type to send midi cc, the buttons never light up. Again... Mac only is having this issue.

Oh I forgot to mention:

tested on Mac mini M2Pro w/ MDP2 2.3300 (didn't work) and recreated the test for a 'sanity check' on my iPhone 12 running MDP2 2.33 (worked fine)

Test upload to ensure nothing is broken.

Edit - looks like everything is working.

There has been no change in layout upload functionality for a while. Remember to save your question (or edit to your question) before trying to use the code. There is an issue if you get over a certain size, but not many layouts get there.

And after a while, the coupon code times out, so you have to obtain a new one by adding a download.

And sometimes it just hands up, and gotta try again.

Edit 2: see the layout on your other Q&A, so it looks like the upload worked.

Are you looking for the sysex device ID information? If so, look at page 64 of the manual. They don't provide it when it is first mentioned on pages 60-61.

Are all the problem controls either super or sub controls? If so, it is not the sysex that is causing the problem, it is just "normal" super-sub relationships.

For sub backdriving a supercontrol, somewhere on the Q&A site in the past year is a discussion about how to prevent feedback from sub control to super control. I believe we had a bug that Dan fixed in certain back drive cases. Quick search didn't find it, but I will keep looking. (I think, but am not sure, that if a super has two subs, then changing one will not feedback, so precluding the feedback might be as simple as adding a "dummy" subcontrol that doesn't send any data, just dampers the feedback.)

If you are setting a supercontrol, there is no way to stop it normally feeding down the chain. I have had to live with this on a few of my layouts. Since it is sending the same data to the synth that it received, is not an issue. But I can see how it could be in some cases.

If data output during the sysex processing is causing real problems, think about adding a subcontrol to the retrieve data control that turns on a SB rule to stop all layout midi output temporarily, until the controls settle down.

In order to see all photos, iCloud Photos needs to be active in both your iPad and computer and both must be on the same network. Do you see the computer photos on your iPad? That may be the issue, not MDP's Image Manager.

I am checking out 2.266 and find the banks and more menu drops down fine ... in Play, but NOT in Design mode. Still am unable to change number of banks in Design mode. Changing number of banks is often necessary when designing layouts.

Still suggest NOT supporting the Split View mode. Why does MDP need it? The current solution seems more like a work around than a desirable operation. It doesn't seem to work reliably 100% of the time. Other apps do not support it. They do not get the 3 dots at top and do not have any operational issues.

Also, the drop down menu may not stay down long enough to activate changing the number of banks in Design Mode. I am not able to test this behavior in 2.266.

The images show the layout I used where more and banks drops down in Play Mode, but not in Design Mode.

It would be great if the Image Manager could import images dropped into the "MIDI Designer/" folder from the Files app.

Motivation: Currently, MD's Image Manager only selects images from iOS Photos. However, there's an bug in the iOS 14 Photos app that removes transparency from PNGs (even when optimization is turned off). So I currently have no way of importing new transparent images into MIDI Designer to use in image panels.

Layout from iPhone to iPad broken; no fullscreen layout in landscape?

I have been using MidiDesigner on my iPhone for years and have a custom layout for my devices. My design is packed but fits my iPhone 7 screen great; however the layout breaks when I open the file on my iPad. Buttons near the edges are resized and moved around haphazardly. No user feedback that controls were relocated; just a very broken layout. If this isn’t a defect I don’t know what is; how can you move layouts from device to device if its display breaks without clear notification or in-app assistance?

Almost as bad, my landscape layout spills onto the right panel and as far as I can tell, I can’t scale my layout or go fullscreen (as I‘m accustomed to when using MD on my phone) unless I switch into portrait mode — I can’t do this as my iPad is fixed in place in landscape.

This is terrible user experience and will require much work for me to fix my layout to use on the iPad.

On top of this nightmare I can’t at all figure out how to go fullscreen in landscape. I do not want two panels (duplicate, blank or otherwise)! I just want to replicate the focused experience I was able to achieve in MD, but the multi-panel user interface in iPad is, sad to say, very awkward, almost unusable. I understand that some users may find it very useful, for me and surely many others, it is a monstrosity. (I hope I am wrong and there is a way to fulfill my obvious need to have a single landscape fullscreen layout, so thanks in advance for showing the exact method to have a single panel fill landscape view in iPad!)

Ensure you have the current dropbox app on your iPad and you are logged in to your dropbox account on that app. The MDP2 button should just open the dropbox app and ask for authentication.

Works great, but non-obvious connection

This plug works great for using my Reface CS as a MIDI controller for my iPad synth apps. But, this does not connect to iOS devices like other Bluetooth products like speakers. You need to open up the synth app and go MIDI settings there and find Bluetooth MIDI choosing that you can finally get the synth w/MD-BT01talking to the app. Seems to work with no delay and minimal movement of knobs/sliders.

If you still cannot get it working, please provide a screen shot of the MDP2 connections page showing your connection status to the BT adapter.

I’m using an iPhone SE with iOS 12.4, MIDI Designer Pro 2 | Version 2.112 | Build 190813

The “Load” button doesn’t work, and I can’t load any saved layouts even though the app indicates there are layouts properly saved in the first few slots.

I go to Config-Actions and press “Load Layout.” I can scroll between “backup” and 001, 002, and 003. I select one, then press the “Load” button. When touching the load button, the button goes from white to gray, but nothing happens. I have to then back out to get to the play screen. The app will then load to whatever was default, but I have no access to any preset I’ve created and have to start again from scratch. Do you have any suggestions how to load a preset? Without being able to load saved work, the app is useless.

iPads never really go to sleep. I've had misbehaving apps drain my battery while the screen was off for a few hours. I had no idea what the issue was until reading your replies, but I had tried other music programs with midi features, and ALL of them froze. Which seemed odd at the time, because Dropbox, Netflix, even Safari all ran fine. In hindsight, after reading about the bug, I should have just powered it off and back on first, just to see if the bug went away, but there was an iOS update, and I thought, 'two birds... the update will reboot it." I know I was tempting fate, but I started the update and..

Voila! Everything works again.

Thank you all for your responses. The restart was evidently what it needed. I didn't know about the Facebook group, and to be truthful, I'm kinda torn. Facebook has made way more than it's share of privacy faux pas in the recent past, but there are so many helpful and informative people and groups, not to mention keeping up with my geo-separated family members. How to control subcontrol sequence (midi CC)?

Hi All,

Trying for some time now to control the sequence of midi CC by dragging the subcontrols (toggle buttons and knobs) in vertical order. (Menu of supercontrol knob —-> relationships——> subcontrols)

The midilog shows not the right order of CC messages, I verified with external midimonitoring. Are there more options to dictate the right order of subcontrols/CC message output? When using seqential option not every knob/toggle button (CC) is being send?!

Hi, I had a crack at this one because I ‘m developing a big one page midi controller for the boss katana.

My design has buttons on each page for different sections: for example amp section has a forward button for delay section and vice versa.

Delay section however is in a different bank so this solution seems to work for me:

- ON left page create button 1 for jump to page X, left side of one big page;

- ON right page create button 2 for jump to page Y, right side of the one big page, you can ‘ hide in play’ this button;

- make button 1 supercontrol of button 2

- copy these buttons to every page where you need them and you have to copy the buttons correctly left and right so copy button 1 stays at left page and copy button 2 at right page.

This seems to work for me.

I scroll to one and tap it.

I seem to be missing something fundamental somehow. I just want a toggle that turns on and off a stop effect in Bias FX. I have control of volume, gain, tone, etc, and the on/off switch is receiving CC23 (my chosen number) but nothing happens. The glow goggles on and off but the effect does not respond. What am I missing, thanks.

Hey there, while we don’t know this MIDI target specificially, it’s generally impossible for MDP2 to receive patch names from the device. You would need to program the patches on the MD side that correspond to the device’s patches... Does that make sense?

I'm considering using only an iPad and two midi keyboards for my keyboard performances. I saw MIDI Designer Pro 2 and wondered if it's what I'm looking for.

Ideally, I'd like to use the following equipment:

1. two (or more) midi controllers with USB connections (connected by means of a powered USB hub)
2. one iPad (I have an ipad mini 4 and an ipad air 2, would have one as backup)
3. usb audio interface

I want a single screen that:

"knows" my iPad apps such as Gallileo, Zeeon, iGrand, iLectric (all on the same iPad)
I can design a layout that has a path for each of the keyboards (each set to a different midi channel) and be able to hit one of a few preset "buttons" on that path that will route my playing to a preconfigured app (upper keyboard might have Galileo and Zeeon, lower might always have either iGrand or iLectric)
mute button for midi activity if a keyboard is not being used (save on cpu usage)
select patches on the target soft synth app (if the app allows for patch selection)
have a rotary control that lets me transpose midi notes for different keys
lets me insert an arpeggiator and turn it on and off at will, control speed
control volume on the target app (CC7?)

I own a peavey at-200 guitar with the complete pack installed. I want to connect it on my ipod touch 4th generation with ios 6.1.6, so that I can control the changing of settings via the ipod instead of fret control which is pretty unreliable.

So someone told me that the latest version of MD needs IOS9 al least.

So I want to buy an older version of MD but I don't know where to findi it.

Or should I buy the latest and then you can send me something so that it will work on my ipod?

What I am trying to do is very simple but I am struggling, it's obviously me but I cannot grasp the logic of what is happening. Things only start going wrong when I exceed 0-127. I have set up a simple test, I created two controls (Knobs) I want them to be perfectly synchronized with ranges from 0 - 255, for MIDI as you suggested I used NRPN 14-bit for both and set MIDI ranges to 0 to 255, number of ticks is 256 ticks, have set one as Master and the other as Slave, however they do not work in a 1:1 ratio (more like 64:1), what am I doing wrong? also I only want one to send MIDI so how do I limit this ?

Sending a bank switch command followed by a program change to a synth

I'm hoping to build a button group of 16 that map to my favorite synth patches. The Yamaha VL I have has 4 banks (2 with 128 patches,1 with 64, and 1 with 6). My favorite patches will not be in the same bank on the Yamaha VL. I've successfully built buttons to select banks and buttons to switch programs. But that's a two step process. I'd like to press a single button and have the bank select command sent followed by the program change.

What's the best way to implement this?

Multitouch Documentation?

How does Midi Designer multitouch work? The release notes for version 1.5.5 say that multitouch drum pads are supported but it can't find documentation. I searched the User Manual for the term "multitouch" and it's not present.

Ideally I'd like to be able to be able to have each of multiple touches of a single drum pad send a different note number. i.e. The first finger down would send say note number 60, the next finger down would send 61, the next would send 62, the next 63, the next 64. The after all fingers are lifted the count would start again at 60. Actually it would even be acceptable for successive touches to produce alternating note numbers, say 60, 61,60, 61 ... The velocity of each note should be controlled based on touch position as is currently possible for single touch notes.

This is for use as a controller for a new type of music-playing application I'm developing. I could develop my own app with the above functionality but I'd rather used Midi Designer, if it's possible.

Thanks for your question. Let's call this "uncontemplated behavior." The MIDI log has been useful for many users, but it doesn't enforce the MIDI spec. Apple's CoreMIDI should be doing that for us, but anyway...

Large black panel spanning two pages (OBP+MBT) controls are hidden

Both 'One Big Page + Move Banks Together' are set.

If you create a large black (Alpha+LED Color far right) panel spanning two pages (B1P1+B5P1) then any controls placed will be hidden, panel does not stay at the back.

Workaround: Create 2 panel B1P1+B1P2 this works ok.

Black (Blank) Action Panels

I keep getting black (Blank) action panels, it appears to happen when: you create a control, the action panel appears, press the red dot to sticky/unsticky it, we now have a panel with a green dot, if you now touch the background, the controls blank out, you can get rid of it by pressing the green dot, over time this seems to cause other issues.

But why would you do that ?

I always tend to move the box from it's starting position to a more convenient one, I have been doing a lot of work 'tick editing', the plus button is very near the border of the box, so on occasion I miss and probably land on the edge of the panel and the background, then the box blacks out, have reproduced quite easily with a new control.

MIDI Log: Receive Errors and Ommisions

Having set a control (Knob) to send a 'Preset Header Request' (F0) 00 01 38 00 6D 46 V (F7) where 'V' is the preset number (two byte word). I have been experimenting with how well the 'MIDI Log' handles the dialogue, I have set the number of ticks to 256, default value to 63(25% 0-63) and 'Snap To Default Value' to max of 16s. It is difficult to run a full cycle without receiving an error, which is a bit concerning for the following reasons:

<1> Maximum data throughput Tx+Rx is only 26,880 bits/16 = 1,680 bits per second. # Basic MIDI Spec = 31,250 Max

<2> The error(s) are consistent and always consist of the same (location) 6 bytes from the middle of the packet.

<3> An example of an error is as follows:

Message In: Length=6: 32 00 00 08 20 00         # Bytes 25 to 30 of the expected 32 byte packet

This is not a valid MIDI command (top bit not set), yet it is not showing as an error, while I understand that this is only dialogue and no action is required, does this mean no validation ?

<4> As I ramp up the throughput we start to lose Rx Packets completely.

I have included a copy of the MIDI log which unfortunately is limited to 80 lines, which when you take into account the Tx Request and the short length wrap-around only gives us around 26 TX/RX cycles.

Request:    F0 00 01 38 00 6D 46 V F7    # 46 Request Preset Header (P)

Expected Response: F0 00 01 38 00 6D 20 PP PP 01 48 (15xAA Preset Name) (5xXX Tag+Step) F7   # 32 Bytes

Not sure if this is relevant but if MIDI Receive is set to on we seem to get more errors.

It might be worth mentioning the reason I started this in the first place, it was to extract the Preset Names in order to populate the ticks, I could then copy from the MIDI Log and then use Notepad++ to edit. Sorry if this has been a bit long winded but not easy to explain :-)

Various bugs in Midi Designer Pro 2: Version 2.8.1 Build 170214

This is a list of bugs I have found during my recent development, I am using an iPad Mini 2 (IOS:10.2). One important point is that as it's a mini 'One Big Page' to me is a little one, I therefore operate in OBP+MBT all the time, all these issues may only be present in this mode.

1. Jump to Page - Does not work across banks without breaking the 'OBP+MBT' rules, this makes it very difficult to structure a multi-page project, I think this is crucial for any development that would be for public consumption. This should not be very difficult to test/check.

2. Load - Append Layout, not working as it should ?

Big Page Set and Move Banks Together are set on both projects:

Project 1:

Bank 1 = B1P1, B1P2, B1P3 # OK
Bank 5 = B5P1, B5P2, B5P3 # OK

Project 2:

Bank 1 = B1P1 # OK
Bank 5 = B5P1 # Ok

Load Project 1 into Project 2 (Append)

Result:

   Bank 1 = Project 1 : B1P1, B1P2, B1P3   # OK
   Bank 2 = Blank               # Ok
   Bank 3 = Project 1 : B5P1, B5P2, B5P3   # ??
   Bank 4 = Project 2 : B1P1       # ??

3. Big Page Set and Move Banks Together are set:

4. Named Ticks sometimes the tick being edited scrolls up out of view, very annoying when you are the left with a black area and have to scroll down to do the next one.

Niggles:

1. 'Exit Design Mode' button always gets put in the worse possible place, not logical.

I think that's it for now, the 'Jump To Page' issue is the most crucial for me as it means I can't release my project until it is fixed.

Picked up your page. The issue is that you must set MIDI values on the supercontrol relative to the 0-127 range (or whatever its range is). So you cannot use 0, 1, 2, 3 for 4 sub ticks. Instead you need to use 0 / 3 * 127 (0), 1/3 * 127, 2/3 * 127, and 3/3 * 127 (127)... If these numbers don't work exactly, I might have the math a tiny bit off (need to use 128 and then subtract one), but for 4 ticks (or 10 or whatever) these numbers should work out perfectly.

Hi, Please can anyone help me, I purchased the midi control section of the package, it's the one that says I can control my Yamaha keyboard voices through my iPad, or that's how I understood it. Anyway I have used garage band and others which have worked perfectly well but this app only works on the iPad with no sound through the Yamaha however when I press the keys on the Yamaha the keys on the iPad keyboard depress also but the iPad stays silent. I find this odd, I use a camera connection kit to hook iPad to keyboard. I've tried uninstalling it but no joy. Did I misunderstand what this app does, only it seems clear to me. The thing is there only seems to be info on here regarding the midi designer but there's more to it and some help would be really good. The app also crashes and I have to restart it.

Hi there and thanks for your question. The JD-990 layout is here, and the topic was already covered in this comment.

Hopefully you can get some use out of the JD-990 layout even though the presets must come from MIDI Designer TO your vintage synth. Popup spent hundreds (thousands?) of hours on it and has provided it (in multiple iterations) for free to the World. It works within the confines of how the synth talks back and what MIDI Designer can do while covering the broad range it does. It would be great if the JD990 had a way to send its individual parameters back, but Roland didn't implement that (sadly).

After hiding a button, can I re use the space that button once had ?

Hi,

Let's say I make a template with pots, sliders and buttons to control Rektor 6 that runs on my laptop.

How do I connect to laptop?

I have also a zoom u24 sound card with MIDI in/out that is connected to iPad via USB cable.

Would I need a MIDI to USB cable?....to connect to laptop?

What do you suggest? Can you give me please an answer before BF is over?

HI and thanks for your question. MDP2 is a free upgrade for MIDI Designer Pro users. If you had bought MDP, it would show up in your Purchased apps.

Instead, you probably unlocked MIDI Designer Lite (which we just released as Version 2.4, a free upgrade for existing users only). Press on the Lite icon in the app and try "Restore Purchases."

Check your receipts from Apple in your email to verify the whole situation, as well.

Thanks again for your help. Midi Designer Pro v1.7.0 (Build 1701) is now instaled on my iPad 1 (iOS 5.1.1) Layout Auto-Tune for Guitar v3.10 ist also instaled on MD Pro.

However, have no control on my Peavey AT-200 (with firmware Peavey AT 200 v2.27) and Complete Pack v3.32

I am using a USB to MIDI adapter fro M-Audio (Model M-Audio Midisport 1x1) and have conection using ATG Settings Manager and ATG Software Manager gOS: v2.7 Everything works fine here.

Starting Midi Designer on iPad (Midisport 1x1 allread conected throw iPad Camera Connection kit from Apple) i cann see on the Log window of MD pro the MIDI Control Change Messages, and The LED on the M-Audio Midisport 1x1 MIDI Out flashing when press on a button but nothing alse hapend.

The Sound on AT-200 is not change. What ever i select. It´s like nothing conected, or the hardware on my AT-200 do not "Read" the output from MD Pro.

What i´m doing whrong? I have check all the cable connections. Everything ist fine .. :-(

Any suggestions ?

Latency problems

I made a control panel for Sampletank , but have a MIDI latency of about .3 sec

IPAD is connected via Roland midi cable to HX3 organ

Playing with Sampletank , no latency at all !

Very annoying when playing key instruments for instance piano.

What can be done. It's unusable with such a delay .

Can't Backup My Layout to Email or Using In-App Purchase

I click config and Mail Layout on my ipad but the email never comes and not in spam.

I tried Automatic Backups to Cloud and an in-app windows comes up. I click Buy it now ($1.99) then nothing happens.

I think I have a problem with the app so I want to backup my layouts so now I am stuck with no backup and no way to get it off my ipad.
