Answered: Mac OS Design Mode locked after computer startup

It is the Extra Features pack that I have purchased on the iPad. It accepts my response that I already bought it. At that same time when starting MDP2 after starting my Mac I always get a popup stating "MDP2 on macOS ... macOS support is provisional ..." They seem to be linked together.

I don't ever manually lock my layouts. It always happens to me when first starting MDP2 after starting my Mac, not when Loading a file. MD Next doesn't seem to have these issues.

In Mac OS, when attempting to move a control in Design Mode, occasionally the control will not move. Attempting to change the size of a control is just as inconsistent.

If a control is selected by holding the mouse down and moved, the control may or may not move. If the control is selected and the mouse is released and then reselected and held down, the control may or may not move. I haven't found any consistent behavior one way or another.

The layout is a simple test layout. This issue occured with any layout since the inception of the Mac OS version. It's more of an inconvenience to have to attempt to move or resize a control but not an outright failure.

Pretty neat layout.

The issue is in the supercontrol / subcontrol "tree" arraignment. There are times we do not allow a subcontrol to back drive a supercontrol:
- When a supercontrol has multiple subs (exception being a button "group" under a variable master)
- When a supercontrol has a combination of a button group and knobs, the knobs do not back drive <- this is your issue

These can backdrive a supercontrol
- a button group
- a single subcontrol

There may be a way to rearchitect the supercontrol/subcontrol relationship to get your desired result, but may take some thinking.

Easiest is to use the send on release only option.

If you want to be absolutely sure you don't overwrite an existing preset, there are more advanced implementations.

Simplest is to add two buttons:
- first disables the picker while you select the correct number - toggle, no send/ receive, set as enable / disable button for the picker
- second sends the selected preset once you turn the toggle on - momentary, no send/receive, supercontrol, force not stepper, options as super, send current value

Disable button one, select the preset, enable button one, press button two to send, turn off button one.

You can do a one button solution using StreamByter. In output rules module, store the output preset number, block the message, use a momentary button to transmit the value. Is more complicated, since it need a few lines of SB code, but operationally simpler, since there is only one button to worry about.

RD-88 Loading scene including associated tones

Hi guys!

I recently got a Roland RD-88 and downloaded Midi Designer. It's working great, but one thing doesn't work and I'm trying to figure out if it is me, or just not supported.

When I go to the scene tab and move the selector to a scene, the associated tones (1 to 3 depending) are not selected in the other tabs where you can change the layer from Lower, U1, and U2. I understand that setting the 3 tones on the Alphabetic look up tab, won't change it in the other lookup tabs.

Is this a limitation, or just something that wasn't added?

It would be great if when you load a scene or 3 tones on any of the tabs, they would show on the zone tab. Something like the attached mock-up.

If you don't know of any technical reason why it can't be done, I'll attempt to modify the design myself.

- This IS a BT MIDI connection. The BT connections you see under the BT menu on either MAC or iPad are audio or keyboard.
- To see Bluetooth MIDI connections on the MAC, you look in AUDIO MIDI Setup / MIDI Studio.
- To see BT MIDI on an iPad, you need to look in a MIDI BT app.

- The connection may be remembered, allowing skipping some of the steps. You may be able to just turn on the "advertise" on the iPad, then click the connect in AUDIO MIDI Setup. But sometimes not. This is how Apple has configured the BT MIDI connection process.

re: Finally (while I have you) this appears to be a bi-directional connection. Is MD2 set up to be able to read MIDI from the host, or can it only send MIDI messages? I'm not sure if the Mac app I'm working on sends state-changes on MIDI controlled parameters, but if MD2 can't process them, it's a moot point.

- This is a two-way MIDI connection. You can control MIDI inbound, outbound, or through in the MORE / CONFIG / CONNECTIONS menu.

Make the tick button "send on only" - MDP2 evaluates the named tick value on both the on and off action, which sends a double action in this case. I do not believe this is a defect, just a feature, which mostly is good.

The problem is that in iOS 15, Apple took over the location previously used for MORE button for the multi-tasking.

As far as I can recall, there should be no issue with a hardwire connection from MDP2 to the Jupe. As far as I recall, the Jupe has to be in Generic midi mode. I would recommend one of the Jupe FB groups for more specifics on this. Or maybe RSJ's Jupiter X-pert publication. (I am on the road for a while and didn't bring the Jupe on this trip, so cannot verify.)

You can access the names of scenes from MDP2 - they are just sysex like any of the other settings. But MDP2 does not have an ability (currently?) to display or manipulate dynamic string data. Some users have provided ability to display or edit names digit by digit, but I tried this once on the RD2000, found it too clunky, and dropped it.

Frankly, since Roland came out with their PC based editor, it mostly superseded most of my Jupiter X-Xm layouts (other than the bulk settings update - they still do not have anything equivalent), so I pretty much stopped updating them, although I did add support for the latest model update.

One big page really is two separate pages that are shown at the same time. Anything that hangs off the right side of the left page may not behave properly.

Split your background image into two separate pieces, one on each part of the page. May take a little trial and error to get it split and aligned as you want. That way it should behave consistently.

There is a combined bank & program change message predefined, but the channel & bank are fixed. I find it more useful to have one control set to control bank changes, one to control the program changes, then group with a supercontrol. MDP2 also has controls for these.

In the control property explorer, under the midi tab, message type
- choose bank select for bank control. This is automatically a 14 bit control, with both LSB and MSB. If your device only wants MSB or LSB, then use CC 0 for MSB, CC 32h for LSB
- chose program change for the PC message. This by default is a 7 bit control.

Using named ticks, you want to fill these with synchronized values to select programs in the desired sequence.

Look at the Master's class layout (https://mididesigner.com/qa/7955) tab on bank and program changes for an example that shows how to do this. Although reading it now, I guess it have been more clear, so reply if you have more questions after reading it.

Midi data is seven byte, not eight. 7F is the highest byte value. Bytes beginning with 8_ and higher are reserved for Midi commands.

127 = 00 7F
128 = 01 00
etc.

If you want the control to cover the full 16383 range fro 00 00 to 7F 7F, you will need to use named ticks, best loaded from a spreadsheet.

How can I configure a USB midi controller keyboard (Alesis Q61) to control both Midi Designer Pro AND a Hauptwerk organ on a Macbook Pro at the same time? I am able to connect the keyboard directly to my computer and play the HW organ keys. I am also able to connect the keyboard directly to my iPad and control an MD button from a Sustain pedal. I need to connect to both at the same time. In the layout image, the small down and up buttons are supercontrols to the DOWN and UP stepper buttons. They respond to CC 2-64 and 3-64 from 2 different keyboards and advance the DOWN or UP stepper. The button settings image shows what I have configured for one of the small buttons.

I want to be able to trigger the stepper up or down in MD from hardware switches connected to the keyboards Sustain input while playing the organ keys in the computer.

I cannot seem to get this to work right. It´s connected and the Omni hardware 37 map is loaded. The controls seem slugish and tune and modulation does not work as expected... Am I doing something wrong here ?? Omnisphere says it uses NRPN midi standard - can that be the problem ?? How to set this up so it works flawlessly... ??? All the best Morten

Basically I'm sending the correct messages through and I can see the ADSR change as I send Decay and Release lower values but sound doesn't actually change until I turn the knob. It's strange because I've tried it on multiple different pot modes.

The short of it is that there are several steps. The first thing you need to do is open the MIDI Designer layout (the .mididesigner file) on your iPad and use “Open In...” in your browser to open it in MIDI Designer Pro 2.

Then you need to be able to send MIDI from MIDI Designer to Ableton Live via musicIO MIDI, the built-in connection over Lightning Cable, or MIDI over Wifi (check midiDesigner.com/connect, which is outdated but still relevant).

I am nearly done with a Layout for the Moog Sub Phatty. I've gotten most of the controls to respond to the outgoing CC's from the editor. But I need help to make the editor read the current settings of the hardware.

If I adjust a setting on the editor, the hardware responds, but if I turn a knob on the hardware, it doesnt change in the editor.

I've set the midi in and outs of both the Ipad and the Sub Phatty.

Can you please help with this problem?

I was recommended here by the Audiobus forum. I am trying to create an editor for the Moog Sub Phatty on the ipad. I was wondering if it is possible to create one that works just like the desktop editor that Moog has. I would want to be able to send PC and CC changes from my midi foot controller to change presets, that way, we would be able to access more than 16 presets without a computer. I am looking to have at least 128 presets. Does Midi Designer Pro work like this?

2.9.0 (201704121101): Sequential Subcontrols issue

I'm noticing when I use 2 sequential subcontrols the supercontrol works correctly. When I add a 3rd sequential subcontrol the values around the transition area are, i.e. the max value of #2 and the min values of #3 are not consistent..

Are there any limitations with the number of sequential subcontrols that can be used?

FYI, my subcontrols are set to bank/program change. I wanted to make one slider for four banks of program changes. The fix was 2 sets of "2 sequential subcontrols with 1 supercontrol. The 2 supercontrols are then subcontrols for one supercontrol. That's the only way I could get it to work correctly.

Controlling mod matrix - one knob three parameters?

So, I started working on an Oberheim matrix 1000 editor and ran into problems with mod matrix. The Sysex string goes something like this:

10 06 0B <mod #> <source> <value> <destination>

For source you have 1-20 things you can pick.

For destination, you have 1-30 or something.

This becomes a problem if you want to be able to set any combination of sources and destinations. You could set one source and destination in the code, hardwired so to speak. But there are a multitude of parameters that can be selected and modulated, so this ruins the point of the mod matrix.

Anyone know how to modify parameters with complex sysex like this?
