Provide ability to select LED color for Button Labels

Button Label Colors (and other controls?) are either white or black. Provide ability to select the range of colors such as available for the label color of Labels. Suggest adding a LED Color selection to Label Properties. Have need for color labels on buttons without a hack to overlay a color label on a button with a white label.

A Label's Autosize button cannot be turned off. This requires changing the size by changing the Label's selection bounding box. This can run into problems when the Label's box size gets too big and cannot exceed the overall MDP window. The Label may not be able to be moved where desired.

Only valid instantiation is a knob with no values or ticks (since it is pure relative).

By definition is a supercontrol - has no capability to send own value.

Increase encoder by one click, pushes up all subcontrols by one MIDI value. As encoder rotates, subcontrols continue to increase until they hit max.

Sorta like a "stepper" on steroids. Not the "normal" supercontrol MIDI value to position relationship.

Subcontrols do not provide any feedback to encoder (even in the valid case of single sub).

Only valid supercontrol of an encoder is another encoder or a momentary button acting as a stepper (up or down).

additional notes:

There is nothing “relative” about the existing relative option in MDP2. It just sends MIDI values 63 and 65. Nothing inside MDP2 can react to this in a “relative” way. There may be some dinosaur hardware board somewhere that understands this. But 99% of MD users have no use for it, prolly is confusing. Hook up the “relative” control, and all it does is drive subcontrols to either the 63 or 65 MIDI position. Huh?

There IS one existing true “relative” control in MDP2 - a momentary button configured as a stepper. It doesn’t care what its subcontrol values are, but can nudge them up or down. (All other controls drive a subcontrol to a predefined position derived from the MIDI value.)

So what I envision with the encoder is the steppers big brother. And like a stepper, its own value has no meaning.

The killer use is that it preserves relative positions of its subcontrols. Think of a mixer - set all your individual channel volumes as desired. Now grab the “encoder” supercontrol, turn up three positions, and all your subs move up three positions. This can be done with lots of SB code (as my example).

Dynamic Clock (Midi Clock) Feature

I have had occasion to require a Midi Clock as input to MDP2. I use MidiFire's Dynamic Clock driving StreamByter. In your relationship with Audeonic can you include their module as a plug in to MidiDesigner? Parameters (i.e., tempo) need to be controlled from MDP2. Creating a metronome is one use case. Another is a beat display without having to use an external Midi clock.

Here is the answer I posted for you on FB, didn’t realize you asked both places. If any follow up, let’s keep it here.

The MDP2 format for the sysex message would be "43 70 70 40 50 V" - then select "2" for bytes in value.

Next question would be how it is scaled. You can start by selecting Midi min of 40 and max of 240. (You have to set 2 bytes in value first or midi max value will be limited to 127).

If that doesn't work, a few other ways to suss out the coding:
- if tempo goes from 40.0 to 240.0, try 400 min, 2400 max
- if the board will transmit the sysex, turn on log and watch what the min/max values transmitted are, and how they follow the tempo control
- total brute force - choose 0 min 16383 as max, and scan through to see where tempo tracks the mdp2 control. Maybe divide into 1000k chunks rather than trying the entire range at once.

You didn't include the board specifics so I could do more research, but looks like a Yamaha from the 43 code. Since mfrs often stick to a common format, you might find a similar mfr layout where the tempo format is decoded.

I wanted to create an 'activity indicator', based on incoming note on/offs on a specific MIDI channel.

I can't see way to do this natively in MD. Any indicator I can come up with based on MIDI notes requires a specific note to be designated, when I would like just *any* note within channel to trigger my indicator.

I created a StreamByter solution, but I'm doing that thing again and wondering if it would be worth adding something native to MD?

It would be nice to be able to issue a command from a DAW (or live performance software, such as Cantabile) to tell MD to load a Layout and switch to a page within a Layout. For me this would be a massive time-saver, so imagine for others too.

Coupled with this may be an option I would like to see to be able to order and arrange stored Layouts. This would be necessary to tie a Layout to a known reference number.

Trigger flux patterns 4 pockets

Hi I am trying to trigger Flux by 4 Pockets. It has 16 patterns that I would like to trigger. It seems to respond to CC message but not PC messages. I would like prefferably to use the doc picker as then I could see the name of each pattern. I have discovered that I can use 2 buttons to incrementally move the picker up and down. Problem is that using the CCs it seems to jump patterns. I know I am doing something wrong. I would have thought that the Steps should be 16? Any help in setting this up would be very appreciated. I am using Mididesigner in split screen mode inside AUM.

Suggestion to display only the current digital value of a Slider/Knob

An approach that will work for my application is to display only the current digital value of a Stepper (with variable font} without the Slider/Knob outline showing. The current slider font is too small to be useful. The screenshot shows the current slider layout and a suggested digital display showing only the value (maybe even text??).

MD is part of my complex setup using only the virtual Midi in/out ports. For now, every time after launching MD i have to check if any other sources and destinations are selectet. Every now and then i need to deselect them so they do not interfer with my complex routings. Do you see any possibility to make the setup persistant like maybe an exclusive use of the virtual ports or the external sources and devices default to being deselected ?

Fast layout switching

MD and all the community effort unlocked the new hardware features in Omnisphere 2.5 for me. Thanks for that!

But for switching between multiple Omnisphere instances with different hardware profiles I would like some quicker/smarter way to switch the corresponding layouts in MD. I haven't fully tested it, but I can imagine that all parameters are started off with a default when you load the other layout. Knobs have to pick up again.

Are more users interested in using multiple layouts during their sessions and would like this 'fast layout switch (with memory)' feature request to?

Forgive if this has been answered already but couldn't find it anywhere. One really basic feature missing from MDP2 as far as I can tell are waveform icons. Just the obvious dozen at most in small sizes for use round knobs, buttons and sliders - sine, square, triangle, random, noise, saw etc.

It's a great question. We understand that billions of people use Windows and Android, and they're both great platforms. Both platforms have advantages over Apple devices in some contexts, and both give a greater choice of hardware, customizability, and so on. However, for now, we haven't gotten any movement forward on bringing MIDI Designer Pro 2 to Android nor Windows. We're an entirely bootstrapped, 100% developer-owned business. We explored doing it ourselves, which we cannot afford (even to get to MVP). It's also high risk since we have no experience selling on Android/Windows, and have come to understand that it's harder to make a market on both of those platforms. We also explored getting a partner on board, perhaps to pay us a licensing fee, but with no luck.

We're open to the possibility but for our current 1.5 year roadmap, we're not envisioning coming to Android nor Windows.

It's worth noting that you can often get an iPad that's ideal for MDP2 for as little as $99. We're recommending an iPad Air 2 or better at this point.

1) the option to DON'T change the behaviour of the element when it becomes a Supercontrol (still does in parallel to be the "super" what he is designed for)

2) the option to hide a Subcontrol when the controlling Supercontrol is inactive - i.e. I just need to set a reverb level when the reverb is turned on

3) the ability to group some buttons and have just one active at a time without the need to set a hidden Supercontrol

Ok, apparently I had to 'answer' the original question to be able to upload pictures.

So this answer is for both danklim and larrypjr.

If you read my answer from jul 30th it may explain what I am showing here.

If you look at the red rectangles you can see that I have a label (the shrunken cross faders) for both which reverb algorithm I am using and for the name of my current preset. When I press the blue 'algorithm' button it toggles between the two and the label on the cross fader changes to match the active algorithm. The same happens with my presets. The names of the presets are the names of my current batch of songs. You can also see that the preset button is lit blue, which kind of makes my preset label redundant.

Display only controls

How about some display only controls?

One would be like the center section of a knob, but just have the number shown, and no output. Configure the same way as a knob, such as named ticks, etc.

Second would be just active line of a picker. Again, configured the same way as picker, but just shows single line, and sends no output.

Finally, toggle button, in essence a status light.

As display, prolly always be no touch in play mode.

You can just set up another app to host your song charts or slideshows. Check out OnSong. It can receive page turn commands over MIDI (from MIDI Designer, or a foot pedal).

There are other options as well. But OnSong is the app I have experience with and it is rock solid.

Bank/Program named tick list suggestion

How about a named tick list which bassically is the Bank/Program change but with the added function of specifying the bank number on each row, i.e

Bank MSB / Bank LSB / MIDI value / Display value / Text

I could use this for instance for a list of songs that are organized in banks (or any other parameter, e.g effects, that are grouped in banks according to type).

I would love to connect a bluetooth keyboard to Midi Designer on my iPad3. So I can operate the buttons/knobs/sliders etc wireless in Midi Designer via "Pedalboard".

Is this possible? I've read that it's possible with an iRig Blueboard, but I don't have one...

If it's not possible yet, is it maybe a good idea for the future?

Text label with list of values

I think variable labels have been discussed, but it was with some connection with conditionals, and I think it could be solved in an easier way.

I have an effect pedal where several knobs change function depending on which effect program is loaded. It would be super useful to be able to re-label these controls when the program knob changes value. An easer way however would perhaps be to allow a label to have a list of values, the same amount as the program knob, and then make the label a subcontrol of the program knob. That way you could have the parameter knob without label and place the dynamic label next to it.

I'm making this a suggestion because you cannot make such a template... yet. However, if somebody were to make an app that acts as middleware -- translating Mackie into mappable MIDI and vice-versa -- then you could.

swap X / Y parameter option on all dialogue boxes for XY PAD

hi

i had a play with xy pad and noticed the ability to swap from X/Y was kind of hidden on the properties page.

to quickly swap from x/y the user has to select properties each time.

is it possible to have a consistant button (location/area in the menu) to enable the user the swap on each relevant page.

perhaps have a colour scheme for X and Y to ensure its a little clearer .

and while i'm here , maybe make the boxes longer , i'm on ipadpro and still often have to scroll down to get to some option,.

maybe reduce the spacing little on the options, smaller font or something ?? (depending on ipad/ipad pro / resolution etc).

Thanks, this is a great suggestion. It's definitely scary that there's no way to visualize, organize and edit presets in MD. One intermediate way this might happen is to provide a preset export file (in, say, XML) and be able to import that same file. One of the issues is that the preset values are tied to unique IDs that each control has, but those are not exposed to the user anywhere. Since names of controls aren't necessarily unique, it's hard to think about how this would look to the user.

For now, this will be added to the suggestions list, but the more clarity and discussion we have regarding how this would be implemented (in the simplest way possible), the more of a chance it has of getting implemented.

You did not mention what tools you use to create your program, but if you develop your own program you could connect the button to a handler that does nothing, or not connect it to any handler at all.

If you are using some development kit that creates the program 'automagically' you might have to set it to some MIDI message, and if so, I suggest you use the keep-alive message instead.

New Global Config Option: Hide page and bank numbers in 'Play Mode'

As my project is fully structured there is no need for the page or bank numbers at top of the screen, all page jumps placed within the project, the page and bank numbers at the top are not only a distraction but can be pressed accidentally when aiming at a control near the top of the screen. It would therefore be useful to be able turn page and bank numbers off in play mode, and avoid the user leaving Kansas and ending up in Oz.

Shouldn't a momentary button set as a super control stepper change values on an XY pad axis?

I'm trying to increment the axes of an XY pad in increments of 1 by using stepper super control buttons. The subcontrol is an axis of the XY pad but I can't get it to work. I can make the stepper increment a slider/crossfader element, which in turn is a super control for the XY pad axis. However, I'd like to eliminate that intermediate element. Am I missing a setting?

Negative Hex

Most of the work I am doing at the moment is Sysex I was a little surprised that the app did not produce the negative (2's Compliment) values, it knows the 7bit maximum (4bytes=268435455) so why not just reduce it by the negative tick+1, therefore -20 = 268435436. Might be good idea for a future release with little impact on existing code.

Sysex - Control Variable (V) value initialisation

It would be useful to have the initial value of 'V' to represent the current value of the selected parameter (soft control) of the device, my idea would be as follows:

The 'V' mechanism is already in place, therefore all that is needed is the value to put in it on the intialisation /loading of the control. I propose using initialisation strings, these could be identified by the placing the sysex start and end codes which are normally not needed, and consist of two sysex strings the 'Request' and the 'Expected Response' eg:

F0 00 01 38 00 6D 47 00 7E F7    # TC-Helicon VL3, Parameter Request (0x47), Param Number 126 (0x007E) Harmony_Style
F0 00 01 38 00 6D 22 00 7E V F7    # Expected response, where V is already defined as a 4 Byte Word in control MIDI setup.

Actual Response:

F0 00 01 38 00 6D 22 00 7E 00 00 00 07 F7    # Therefore V would be initialised with 7

The expected response can be used as a mask for the value as well as for validation, I am only talking here about numeric values, I can appreciate that alpha strings are a whole new ball game.

-I am willing to share my work without earning any money, but not to be freely modified
-No one would bother creating an original design (I mean an elaborate graphic design) if anyone can use it for any other templates

There is no support for pressure sensitivity in MIDI Designer. Historically speaking, there were several ways to do this:

Using accelerometer data to guess on pressure: this approach is difficult to implement well. Garage Band used (still uses?) this feature and users find this pretty impressive. Downside is it's difficult to implement and might not work depending on where your device is situated.
Using size-of-press... there was a lot of news about this back in 2013. Fascinating read about Orphion.
Using Force Touch
- We asked the Lead Developer of Mito Synth about experiences with Force Touch, and he said: "Force Touch is pretty good. Because it’s only on phones right now, it’s hard to make a comparison with a proper hardware keyboard. It’s definitely not like the accelerometer-based hacks popular around the time of the first iOS GarageBand, or the contact-patch-size ones either. It’s nice, smooth, accurate pressure data. One thing to be aware of is that it’s still not 'velocity': it’s typically still zero (or nearly zero) at the moment of note-down, as the finger makes contact but hasn’t yet really applied pressure."
  
  So that's quite good, but it's not pressure, per se.
- Another issue is that there's no 3D Touch for the iPad Pro (yet)

So... for now we don't have any support for Pressure Sensitivity, but we'll keep monitoring the situation and consider the suggestion.

Smaller font / big screen mode (e.g. iPad Pro 12.9") ?

Hi!

Is there any way to make the smallest text size smaller than it's now? On the big iPad Pro 12.9", even the smallest font is too big and uses a lot of screen space.

Background: I bought a new big iPad Pro for the single purpose of using Midi Desginer, as I needed more screen space for my increased DAW project complexity. Hoever, I learned that the bigger screen shows exactly the same information than the older smaller iPad 2.

Attached is an image with the same layout in older iPad 2, and a new iPad Pro 12.9". The goal is to have a lot more information on the 12.9" screen, but currently it's just the same info on the bigger screen. I can manually make the buttons smaller in Design mode, but even the smallest font size flows outside the smaller buttons with just a few letters -- see e.g the "Vln solo" text on the upper right side of the bigger iPad below. This makes smaller buttons pretty much unusuable on 12.9".

So is there any way to make the text smaller, to use the bigger screen more efficiently? Otherwise I just bought a 1000€ iPad for no workflow improvement :).

Suggestions to Optimize Sysex Work in MDP

Current workflow

I know the green light on the top right corner of the control editing popup let you keep the property window open and move the window where you needed.... Great start for people who need to edit many many controls on a template.. It goes down hill when you start to do heavy sysex editing. .It becomes extremely frustrating to edit sysex messages for 50 controls;

a) I don’t see the full sysex string to compare it with log ... so I need to tab the sysex string to open / edit it.

b) I click edit and then the HEX/NUMERIC keyboard comes up that is not SPLITTABLE. So half of my template is NOT selectable b/c keyboard covers that.

c) I still need to position the keyboard to the byte I edited in the previous control. ......So far 15 clicks :(

It looks to me that MDP follows “I will simplify multi control edits” approach with some tweaks the are in place already. So it does not look that multi-select control is on top list.

MutliSelect workflow

There is a second direction the MDP could take to make editing more efficient. Multiselect control could help with other tedious layout creation issues. I assume the HEX/Numeric Keyboard in Sysex edit is A CUSTOM keyboard. Thus it could add a few extra buttons. If yes that one could have functions

a) Repeat value for all selected controls

c) Increment value for all selected controls by ...

The Multiselect could be used to other functions:

a) shift all the controls one direction up/down left/right

b) change Super on all selected controls

c) change range and default value on all selected control

Dan if this is difficult then we could have an editing page to give us extra editing functions (as there already are a few) Then again you need to move all controls to be edited to the Editing page, to rename, etc.

If MDP multiSelect is not coming to us in near future then please make the Sysex two line long and position the edit to previously edited selection So I don’t need a full day to edit one page. Picture how many more useful layouts would be there if the efficiency of creating layout would take big leap forward in the next MAJOR release. What do you think ?

Named Ticks on Knobs to Buttons

If the MDP sees that there are less than 8 values for a knob ESPECIALLY NAMED TICKs, we should be able to change the type of control to button. You’d turn the KNOB to a BUTTON and each button press would advance to the next value and TICK would be shown. Many hardware work this way especially if manufacturer wants to save a knob and replace it with a sequential button.

More Than Two (L V) Variables for SYSEX Messages

While working on template for Jd-XI I came across with yet another situation where the V2 V3 or L2 L3 would make a lot sense.

V - is a value provided by control and replaced in sysex string by controller value

L - MIDI channel provided from Super control

The Jd-Xi voice has up to 50 parameters per partial voice. There are 3 partials per voice. There are 2 digital voices. The L variable used as channel changer helps so I could make 50 controls and have one super to change the partials byte. So that super can address each of the partial by the L value. But then If I want to do the same for D2 (#2 digital voice) I need to copy the whole page and manually go each sysex and change one byte. If there was the L2 then I would need ONLY 50 controls and two supers one controlling which voice (D!/D2) the second controlling which partial (P1/P2/P3)

L - controls which Digital part D1 or D2

L2 control which partial to edit P1 or P2 or P3

As you all know the more controls on page the longer it takes to refresh. And there are lags... Yes I use Ipad2 to control a few pieces and If my template contains over 100+ controls then the iPad 2 becomes really slow.

BTW if there was no “L” for channel changer then my template for two digital voices on JD-XI would need 3x50x2 300 controls. Each control needs at least 2-3 minutes to be placed customized etc so 3x300 is 900 minutes some 15 hours that is hard to squeeze when you work and have a family.

These are two digital I still heed to “code” analog (50) controls Drum 50x26 control effects 25 controls.

I bet there is at least 1/3 of the MDP users that get excited with the MDP at the begging but as they get to the nitty gridy of real template creation, they find the limitations and excitement goes away. This is especially for Roland products b/c ONLY MDP provides the roland checksum.

Can you add an option to send multiple MIDI events from one control?

The background is the following: For initialization of a patch, MIDI provides (if implemented) the option to request parameters from a synth. However, in order to properly initialize a patch, it would be necessary to request all parameters and initialize the corresponding controls in MD. Currently, this would require to duplicate all controls in a patch, i.e. add for each control a sibling that serves to request its value.

My suggestion is, to add a new type of control that can sequentially send multiple MIDI/SysEx events. Like this, a single control could be programmed to sequentially send all parameter request commands for a patch, which would in repsonse initiallize all controls of the given panel.

This type of thing could certainly be done in MIDI Designer in most cases, but it's not a sysex librarian per se. So there are two aspects to this:

Capturing sysex dumps: you can do this in MD using the Learn function (e.g., for buttons), but it's a design mode function. The name of the patch would be the name of the button... this would all work but might be a bit clumsier than the workflow that you're thinking of.
If the Yamaha instrument can be controlled at a finer level (adjusting parameters via MIDI), then MD would be the perfect tool. We do have support for layout-wide presets, which would allow you to keep the patches on MD itself.
