Getting wi-fi disconnected often now - and reconnecting doesn't work

Something I've been noticing since MDX (didn't seem to happen in Beta). Never had much a problem in the past, but now I get wi-fi disconnected frequently. Disconnecting and reconnecting manually in the Config - Connections dialogue doesn't work, even though the connection is ticked. I have to shut down/re-start MDX.

This could be due to other issues, but it seems too coincidental to not mention it.

BUG: Cannot Review via "Review Now" Popup on macOS

Occasionally, when starting up MDP2 in macOS, a popup appears asking to rate MIDI Designer on the App Store. "Submit" is not operational. I would like to give it 5 stars, but have to settle for Not Now.

This issue existed since the beginning of MDP2 on macOS.

Answered: Image Manager "Apply" is missing.

2.3112 has a dark Cancel and Done button but the process has changed such that a new image cannot be selected. The behavior in 2.311 is such that when a new image is accepted it appears in the images list. Then a swipe to the right shows the “Add Image” button and another image can be selected and added.

This does not happen in 2.3112. Selecting Add Image brings up a window with the last selected image and Cancel and Done choices (top pix in attached image). Tapping Cancel or Done does nothing except close the widow. Tapping Add Image again brings up the previous window.

However, clicking on the image puts a check mark in the image (see middle pix) and clicking Done puts it in the image list. Selecting Add Image again shows the original window with no way to select a new image – EXCEPT, if you Force Close MDP, you get the last pix which allows you to “Select More Photos”.

Aftertouch being filtered out?

I'm trying to add a feature to a Layout that requires the use of channel aftertouch, but MD is not receiving aftertouch messages.

Looking at the log it would appear that aftertouch is not making it through to MD, yet I *know* that aftertouch is in the MIDI data being sent.

Even StreamByter isn't helping me out this time - I tried to remap the incoming AT messages to a controller that MD recognises, but I can't get any response at all, so I guess the AT messages aren't reaching SB either.

The slider I've created doesn't seem to send out AT messages either.

I see a question asked about this back in 2012, and that it was coming in 1.3.8. Was it ever implemented? Or has it been broken some time after that release?

I'm always open to it being something dumb I'm doing!

Some Midi menu options vanish temporarily

This is a minor item - has a work around as below.

While editing controls, when the green stay-open button is active, and on the midi page, if you move to a second control, the "No touch in play mode" and "Use vintage throttle" options vanish.

Work around - tap one of the other tabs, then return to the midi tab, and they reappear.

Using iPad mini on iOS 12.4.3. Have not tested on new iPad Pro with iPad OS, since I am waiting for all the necessary %^&*%% usb c cables to arrive to hook it into my rig.

Answered: App Crashes on Startup (iPhone, iOS 13)

This appears to be the same startup crash discovered on iOS 12 and related to MIDI-over-Wi-Fi. In short, if either device -- computer or iPhone, for instance -- sleeps, the app becomes non-responsive. Worse, it cannot start correctly ever until the device is hard booted.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201559

We're still hearing from our users on this thread.
MIDI Designer's knobs don't receive new values when changing preset on synth

Hello,

I'm using MIDI Designer on the Moog Minitaur, and while the knobs value is perfectly sent and received by both the iPad and the synth when rotating them directly, MD doesn't update its knobs when changing preset directly on the Minitaur.
Would anyone know if this can be fixed and how?
Answered: Battery usage when asleep

Thanks for the question. MD follows all the typical rules of good-citizen iOS apps. If it gets moved to the background, it will spin down the frequency of all “polling” operations, including the search for Bonjour connections and the actual incoming MIDI queue. In addition, UI updates should not occur when the screen is off or the App is in the background.

MD could probably be much more battery efficient while it’s on the screen and while it’s off. I’m not aware of how it handles the iPad-off (asleep) state, but judging from your question, the answer is that it’s not great.

One thing to try is to background MD before suspending the iPad.

For now, I think we can consider this a deficiency, and we’ll move to put in the hours to improve battery performance at some point.

Thanks for reporting.

Is there a limit to nested controls? Specifically, Preset knobs?

I'm trying to configure a preset knob which controls other knobs that control buttons that control preset knobs, etc. When I try to add a sub-control to the preset knob, it won't let me do it because of a control loop, but there's no loop that I can detect.
Knob with 'Send on Release Only' does not send any MIDI out on first 'touch'

In my layout I use a lot of knobs and sliders with the 'Send on Release' option enabled. When I launch MD (or just reload the layout) the very first value change (i.e. touch, move and release) on any of those controls does not send its MIDI out. It's only on the second value change when these controls begin to spit out their MIDI.

I have this 100% reproducible in the shipping v2.96.0 and in the current v2.97 beta.

Stream Byter and MD: No support for looped conditionals?

I am trying to send multiple Sysex messages in a loop via Stream Byter.

From the Stream Byter documentation it seems that I could use the +L flag to indicate that a condition is to execute in a loop. Unfortunately this results in an error when I try to install the Stream Byter Input rule:
Answered: Midi bindings made from Midi Designer inside Beatmaker 3 or Modstep no longer function after MD is restarted?

I solved this for myself. I figured out that you simply can't use the "MIDI Designer Pro 2 Virtual Out" as an input device in Beatmaker3 or Modstep when midi mapping. If you have only MDP2 virtual out turned on in these apps when you make midi map bindings, the bindings will only work during the current session. When you restart the apps, they will no longer function.

The solution is to activate the input device "Beatmaker 3" in Beatmaker3 (MDP2 Virtual Out can also be activated), or in Modstep ONLY activate MIDI Source "Modstep Internal", and of course have them activated in "Hardware and Virtual Destinations" in MDP2.

Multi Stepper Via Buttons - No Longer Work

I wanted to create a stepper button to increment a control by 3, the procedure I followed was to create a Master (+3) button to control three (+1) buttons each of which was a Master (Stepper) to the control, each individual button will step the control as expected, however their Master (+3) button will only increment the control by 1, I then decided to download the example below, it would appear that it also will only increment by 1 (Instead of +20), is this by design (new) or a bug.
MIDI Receive over Bluetooth/USB unreliable in MDP2 2.9.0 Build 170512 ?

I have long suspected that I had issues with MDP2 and MIDI receive, this was put down to issues with 'IOS Core MIDI' however that would appear not to be the case. I performed some tests using MDP2, the tests where very simple, and used a Bluetooth Wireless Connection (Yamaha MD-BT01) to my iPad Mini 2 (iOS 10.3.2), I created a 'New Project' then turned on the 'MDP2 MIDI Event Log' I did nothing else other than monitor the MIDI Input, I had the VoiceLive3 Extreme set to Preset 115 then stepped (On the VL3X) to Preset 116, and monitored the MIDI Input, MDP2 failed in 7 out of 10 cases to register (In the log) the program change (Preset 116 - C0 73) I had noticed this earlier within my project when it failed to step from 115 to 116. I repeated this test with two other applications (MIDI Wrench & MF Monitor) both of which worked fine, I assume they use the same 'IOS Core MIDI', I had no other apps running during these tests, these are the outputs of all three apps:

<> Preset 116: # Using MIDI Wrench (Output from Log) # Batch Of 10 tries - All Ok

Time.824 CC032 Value = 0 # Bank 0

Time.824 Pg Ch Value = 115 # Preset 116 (B0)

Time.825 CC116 Value = 0

Time.840 CC046 Value = 64

<> Preset 116: # Using MF Monitor (Via MIDImitr) # Batch Of 10 tries - All Ok

CC032 Value = 0 # Bank 0

CC046 Value = 64 # B0 2E 40

I also tried the tests using USB and this proved to be equally unreliable.

If you need any more information or want me to test anything let know.
Answered: Master <--> Slave controls lose sync, sometimes out by 1

Thanks for your question. To get these controls in sync, they would need to have at least 256 values in the MIDI type that is selected for them. Otherwise the behavior is undefined (and the controls might not sync up, which is what you're seeing).

It doesn't matter that they're on different pages. If you were to select a 14-bit MIDI type, like NRPN 14-bit or 14-bit CC, you'd be fine.

One Time Low Memory Warning in 'Play Mode' becoming more frequent 16GB iPad mini 2 (IOS 10.3.2)

MIDI Designer Pro 2 Version 2.9.0 Build 170512

I did try to reply to my previous post but it appears now to be Hidden, and not allowing a reply.

Midi Designer Team - Previous response:
Hey there, as far as I know, leaks are only occurring in Design Mode, though the crash may happen in Play Mode. So if you were to force-quit MD and then launch and never enter Design Mode, you should be fine.
On the other hand, the Mini 2 has 50% as much RAM as the iPad Air 2... so that's another way to solve the problem for you (as we endeavor to find a fix). Thanks

My Previous Reply:

My understanding was that the app would run without issue on the iPad Mini 2, so I see no need to buy an iPad Air 2 not that I can afford one anyway. I was disappointed that the 'Memory Issue' was not considered important enough to be fixed in the recent release.

<> My Latest Test Results 07/06/2017

These tests where carried out using the following rules:

    Both WiFi & BT Off
    No other apps running
MDP in 'Play Mode' only (Never entered 'Design Mode' at any time)
On a couple of tests I did re-boot the iPad to see if it made any difference.
The test pass consisted of no more than page navigation through the layout, using
super+sub buttons (workaround for 'Jump to Page' not working in OBP+MBT mode).

Pass 1: 3 mins to One Time Low Memory Warning
Pass 2: 3 mins to One Time Low Memory Warning
Pass 3: 2 mins to One Time Low Memory Warning
Pass 4: 2 mins to One Time Low Memory Warning
Pass 5: 2 mins to One Time Low Memory Warning

What can I say, it did not take me long to replicate the problem in 'Play Mode' I'm sure given time a crash will follow. I am quite happy to accept your very kind offer of an iPad Air 2 :-) or.... just let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.
This issue might only relate to OBP+MBT and may already be covered in previous 'Jump To Page' issues, but I thought I would include it just in case. I have a generic help page that I want to access from various places in my project and then return to the origin, this is an example of what actually happens:
Momentary button stays active when in a button group

im trying to make a simple controller that changes a cc controller's value to a note. When the value changes a note on then off is generated which corresponds to the controller vaue.

I have created a slider with has 12 buttons as subgroup. The buttons are set to momentary. By changing the value of the slider i can select each of the buttons which then are associated with generating a midi note on/off. This was very easy but ...

The last button selected never disactivates (definitely selected as momentary) and so Im left with a note on which I have to cancel manually (midi panic etc)

Ive investigated the forum but the only references to workarounds for this problem when back in version 1.7 and the relevant menu options dont seem to still be around.

This issue seems to start when multiple buttons are associated with a controller as a supercontroller. This creates a button group which, by design would usually have one button always activated. Ive looked at the option of using the second touch as a way to disactivate the las button selected but a more automatic solution would be better.

Im a new user so please excuse me if Im doing this the wrong way around. Ill accept any solution that basically creates notes (on then off) by moving/changing a controllers value.

After IOS 9, MD crashes when sending Program Change on Midi Channel 1

Midi Designer 1.7.3 Build 17305 started crashing after I upgraded my IPAD to IOS 9. I'm now at 9.2.1 This is a different issue, than has been previously identified.

I deleted the config.xml, but MD kept crashing. While troubleshooting the instance of the crashes, I found that it was related to one device. The device would accept Bank change commands, but whenever I sent a program change, the device would accept the change, and then MD would crash. Since MD was working fine with other midi devices, I decided to change the midi channel from 1 to 9, it now works perfectly every time. I have been using MD for a couple of years, and these MD control panels have been in place for a long time. I need all 16 channels to work, because I control my whole recording studio using MD. I do not have any return communications going to the IPAD, it's outbound only.

I know it sounds strange, but it's happening, any assistance will be appreciated. - Keith

Preset2 subcontrols=knob13, knob14
Preset3 subcontrols=knob10, knob11, knob12, knob13, knob14

The Panic Button in MIDI Designer sends a Note Off for all channels and notes. [ User Reference Guide on Panic Button ]

Note, however, that you can also use MIDI messages for a Panic Button. Depending on your MIDI target, this might work better: fewer MIDI messages sent and the MIDI target can optimize its response.

On the other hand, your MIDI target could also ignore these messages or just use them as regular control change messages.

Answered: MIDI Designer 12 and MIDI Designer Lite Cost $999!?

July 2015: MIDI Designer 12 is back from vacation, but Lite continues to play on the beach.

MIDI Designer 12 and MIDI Designer Lite are on vacation: MIDI Designer Lite is on vacation

http://mididesigner.com/midi-designer-lite-on-vacation/

However, there is no way to remove them from the App Store without interrupting updates for existing Lite/12 users (some of whom have unlocked to MIDI Designer Pro from within Lite). Originally, we raised the price to the highest allowable in the App Store, which removed both apps for a time. It also kept them available for existing users. After a few weeks, though, they're back.

While we're expecting no buys for $1000, apps that do far less have sold more than a few copies at that price.

In general, though, we're recommending that users buy MIDI Designer Pro:

We do apologize for the confusion. We're trying our best to move a complicated situation forward while honoring our commitment to our current users.

If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Midi notes sound but not all display

This question is a little difficult to explain, so I've included a video regarding the issue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydD0cOk1V-M

Notes played from an external keyboard (via laptop software) and recieved by Midi Designer do not all register with a signal indicator which appears to be an error.

Notes played from one device with midi designer to another device with midi designer (directly or indirectly via a laptop) register all notes played with a signal indicator which is correct.

Is this a bug with midi designer in that certain notes play but do not light up under certain conditions as explained?

	http://mididesigner.com/qa/?qa=blob&qa_blobid=13998677903736407134

3 problems presented in the three pages attached

	http://mididesigner.com/qa/?qa=blob&qa_blobid=12666058390817838301

In the above layout you'll see three pages in one bank.

	1) Bidirectional problem still exists.

In all 4 knobs the midi values are inverted. The 2 of them that have named ticks are jumping their value to the max when midi in is active to CC93 ch2.

	2) On the second page you'll see a RS7000 reverb fx page control.. There is a button that is linked to 5 knobs with the extra CC HOLD option. If you try to delete it, MD crashes.

I've figured out the problem arises when you link the button to more than one knob with the extraCC option. And if you do link with more than one, then in order to delete without crashing you have to unlink from all the knobs.

	3) The knob in the third page has a limited midi value from 70 to 127. If you try to change the default value which is 64, MD crashes. You have to adjust first the min midi value to be lower than 64 in order to be able to adjust the default value.

Do Supercontrol Toggles Work Correctly?

I think this bug is surely related to the erratic behaviour of radio buttons.

If I set up a toggle button to be a super and set the control to send the on value only then in the case that the midi range of this super is 0 to 127 everything is OK. If the range is non zero for both sides and despite the fact that super is supposed to send the on value only to the sub, actually both values are send to the sub. e.g values 1 to 127 will move the sub in both the open and the closed stated of the button.

I don't know if this has always been the the behaviour of toggles but it definetaly isn't right. I've got too many problems when I try to use radio buttons and manipulate other controls in series.

Isn't there a setting on the synth, where you can set that it is allowed to receive MIDI sysex? At least on all the other Roland synths there is something like that. I don't have an Alpha Juno myself, so I could only check the manual :-)
Answered: After selecting a preset, not all values are set correctly on the midi-receiver.

I'm really happy to be able to switch the global presets with footswitch. Now I can play with this ...

I think that for some number of parameters changed when changing the preset (a lot of), some information is lost during transmission and processing in the midi-receiver. Maybe it is because of the high speed serial transmission large set of commands. In fact, the data is transferred without the confirmation of the correct data is received.

MoDrum Sync & MDP startup, preset issues

Hi,

When I start Modrum & have it sending midi clock sync to Bassline app, then start MDP, most times MDP just hangs on the load screen. However, if I start MDP first, there are no issues with using MoDrum & Bassline apps.

I don't know if this is a bug with MDP, but after a search I couldn't find anything on it - has anyone had any issues with loading presets to virtual midi apps? Specifically, when I load a preset to NLog Pro, sometimes, some of my MDP controls will stop working in NLog. My instinct says it's a problem with NLog, but I thought I'd ask here too..

Many thanks & all the best <3

	Hi,

After some experimenting, u can safely ignore my previous post :)

HST, here's some info for people who own both MDP & Loopy to get this to work - Once I changed the min value to 127 (the same as max) inside the button properties everything worked flawlessly (this also explains why only double tapping worked before). Also, presets do save the toggle info, with one caveat, if u load a preset where the buttons are turned on, before turning the same tracks on in Loopy, then the button's functions are reversed...Still very cool stuff!!

Many thanks, & all the best <3

Notes sending an octave lower than value set in Channel-Note

Hi, I'm creating an editor right now with a drumpad page and when I set the note value for, say, a Kick drum at C1, it actually sends C0. This is easily remedied by changing note values to an octave higher than you need them, but obviously not for long if the issue's addressed. Just thought I'd mention it since search yielded no results!

Hi and thanks for your question. This is not a MIDI Designer problem, per se, but we've been experiencing the same problem in our studio. You can see this because any other app (try MIDI Monitor) has the exact same problem.

The responsible thing to do would be to file a "Radar" or bug report with Apple at https://bugreport.apple.com.
Answered: Is there an upper limit to the number of controls Midi Designer can handle?

AFAIK right now, there is no limit, but in a hugely complex setup (lots of super and subcontrols, etc), I'm expecting some latency with 1000+ controls, but this is only for sending. Receiving should be unaffected.

In all cases 130 should be completely fine. But don't take my word for it! Mail your layout to yourself (so you can get it back). Then save a page, and then load it until you have 36 pages in MD (you can create banks and pages) and see how everything works.

Note: if there is a memory issue, MIDI Designer will "dump" pages that it has in memory. This means that, when you switch pages, you'll see the "Loading" message and pages will be delayed. This is less likely in the iPad 2 and happens "like never" in the new iPad ("iPad 3").

Note: With the iPad ("iPad 1") you must kill all other apps while working with MIDI Designer.

While it is possible to get repeats of your Channels and CCs, you have to force that by not using "unused only." If you ever find that this is not the case, let me know and I'll launch a bug search-and-destroy mission.
