February 20, 2024 - Course Correction

On January 25, 2024, we transitioned to a free app -- MIDI Designer Pro X -- with an optional subscription. We heard the disappointment from our existing customers, and we want to correct course.

Today, we are making some changes (now out since MIDI Designer Pro X 10.1.0). Everyone who purchased MIDI Designer Pro 2 prior to our switch to subscription on January 25, 2024 will have lifetime access to all existing features before the 10.0 update.

This includes the core MIDI Designer Pro experience that users know and love and all features that were previously purchased as IAPs (including Stream Byter plugin, Extra Features Pack and Cloud Backups). Future features we develop may also be included, depending on their complexity and cost to maintain.

We are a small company, so we designed the original one-year access plan as a precautionary measure since we were not certain if we could support lifetime access. We sincerely apologize for putting our current users in this position.

Without you, we would not be here today. We deeply value each and every one of you. Your feedback and layouts power MIDI Designer Pro and have helped shape the app into what it is today. Thank you.

But the short vid really begs the question: why do we need users to pay over and over again, instead of just once?

As many of you know, Lemur -- a legendary MIDI controller offered on iOS and Android -- was removed from the App Store in 2022. MIDI Designer was headed quickly in the same direction. Software development is extremely expensive and we cannot just stop. The pressure is constant and furious:

Apple keeps updating iOS, iPadOS and macOS, requiring fast developer response, code changes, and communication changes.
The tech continues to advance -- new hardware, MIDI 2.0 is coming out, etc. -- so we cannot sit still either.
User feedback requires response, new-feature development and app refinement to keep users happy and get new users.

Why Subs, 3/x: Leave my App alone!

Some users have said, "why don't you leave MDP2 alone, offer no updates ever, remove it from the App Store when it doesn't work, and make a new app?" This approach has multiple, hard problems:

How would we communicate to potential new buyers of MDP2 that it's already dead as far as updates are concerned?
How would we communicate to old MDP2 users that we're going to remove the App from the App Store because Apple broke it via update?
how would we determine the App is dead? When it's somewhat broken on the latest iOS version due to an Apple upgrade? How would we know if the break is bad enough to sunset the App (no updates, no downloads)?
How do we explain to new users which App to purchase? We cannot have the App in the App Store not for purchase.
etc. etc.

Why Subs, 4/x: You're Just Doing This to Make Money!

While we're hoping that Premium can, eventually, fund app development, support and other activities in full, the answer is NO. We're doing this to offer the App for free -- with a limited feature set (no page changes, notably) -- to all users with no limits. Eventually, YES, it would be nice to buy a sushi dinner once in a while for the team, but initially the goals are meager: to get MD into the hands of as many users as possible, and to cover costs and fund current and future development.

We've been rolling since 2012, have issued 85+ updates, and users seem happy. Now it's time for me, Dan with our team -- mostly JK on support/community and various users who help out with things like translation -- to attempt to cover costs and avoid having to remove the App from the App Store.

I get it, MIDI Designer is essential to me, how can I help?

Steps to resolve:

Force quit and restart the App.
If force quitting doesn't help, reboot your device. In theory, this should be the same as force quitting, but in the field we've seen that it often sorts everything out.
If a reboot doesn't do it.... Using the Files app, rename everything in your MIDI Designer directory.
1. autosave.mididesigner
2. config.xml
3. sometimes, you have an autosave-presets... rename this too
Force quit and restart.
Load your renamed autosave!
Worst case: delete and reinstall the App. Backup your files first using the Files app!
If the problem happens again immediately, send an email to support via Config -> Actions

MIDI Designer does not currently read string data, so it cannot automatically load preset names. I do not have the layout, but presume it is using "named ticks" for the presets. In this case, there are three approaches:

1. Individually edit the named tick labels
2. In named ticks, select edit text, copy out to a spreadsheet or text editor, and bulk edit preset names there, then reload to MDP2
3. Build a MDP2 macro that recalls the preset names from the hardware, capture in a MIDI monitor program, format in a spreadsheet, and load as named ticks (Prolly only worth the effort if there are a lot of presets). See mididr.com/qa/9176

Images are unique to each layout, stored in the layout, not the app. (Other than the built-in images.)

When you press the image manager delete button, the image is deleted from the layout, including from any panels it was applied to.

If you use a prior layout as the basis for a new layout, it will have all the prior images.

The loop image you posted was transparent. The rewind image is not. Converted the second to transparent, pasted both into a layout without an issue.

I was doing my testing on a Mac, so then thought maybe it was an iPad issue, but tried on the iPad running 16.2. This image is from the iPad.

So I am not seeing an issue with transparent images.

What version is your iOS?

Build the individual buttons that send the desired Ccs.

Build the main supercontrol, assign the six ON buttons as subcontrols. If you want them to send ON only, select that option in OPTIONS AS SUPER.

Build a second supercontrol, assign the one OFF button as subcontrol. In OPTIONS AS SUPER, select both SEND ON ONLY and INVERTED.

Make this a subcontrol of the main subcontrol.

Two items
- maybe the buttons need to be “send on only.”
- if you have a group of buttons options where only one should be active at one time, make a super control knob with all the buttons as sub controls. In this case, you can select “buttons send on only” on the supercontrol instead of separately on each button. Typically you also want to select “second press resends on”

re: Using learn button the pedal 1-5 pressed nothing is captured in MD. Pressing down-up-ctl1-ctl2 then the sysex is captured by the learn.

Learn does not function with SysEx messages. There are too many variables with a SysEx message to determine automatically how it should be coded. Since you have captured the SysEx output from the hardware, you have the information needed to manually enter the SysEx commands.

For example, I see this in your captured output:

This would be entered to MDP2 SysEx as
41 00 00 00 00 20 12 20 00 V, choose one byte V, choose a checksum (doesn’t matter, as long as one is present), with MIDI values of 0 for off and 127 (7F) for on.
MDP2 automatically supplies the leading F0 and trailing F7. The value before the F7 is a checksum, and we see the byte before that changing between 00 to F7, so that is the data value.

MKS-80 not recvieving data from Mididesigner

Hi all

IPAD connected to MKS-80 via Roland UM-ONE USB-Midi.

MKs-80 receives data from other apps like "midisequencer" but not from Mididesigner.

In Config UM-ONE is selected...

When I move faders on Mididesigner the UM-ONE flashes...but MKS-80 is not responding.

What could be wrong here?

The basic app is all that you need, which is the Pro version. Lite is retired. You do not need any extra feature packs.

The Setlist manager layout might provide a starting point, configured to send specific program changes depending on song selected. Or provide a point of departure for additional settings. Looks like we have one Strymon layout, plus a number of Boss layouts.

MDP2 looks for files in one place - the MDP2 folder, which you can find in the Files app - on my iPad/iPhone - MDP2 folder

It. does not have a "general" file open allowing searching folders and cloud. (This is the older sandbox approach, which Apple is now allowing some exceptions to, but MDP2 has not implemented.)

You can use a sharing service, but opening the file from there (or a web location) is somewhat hit or miss, and then you still need a manual save action to get it filed in the MDP2 folder, and you have to save the filename. So for most reliable performance, manual save it as below.

Use dropbox (or iCloud, etc.) to upload from iPad, then download to the iPhone MDP2 folder, and it should appear in the list under config / open

If the layout builder did not include a channel changer control, then the brute force method is to edit each control to (1) the new channel, or (2) to a supercontrol channel changer.

However, a single StreamByter output rule can remap everything to a different channel.

Replace 0 to F for channels 1 to 16 in the second position.

X0 = X2 # remap all channel 1 messages to channel 3

p.s, after checking that the code works on the referenced layout, appears most of the controls are sysex, not channel specific message. Believe there are only three channel specific, so it would not be involved to add a channel changer to the layout.

Simple, brute force approach.

Make three momentary buttons that send the first PC commands to the devices.

Make a momentary supercontrol of the three buttons above.

Repeat four more times.

This is more sophisticated and can be updated without going to design mode, and displays text label for the presets.

For this example, presume that the PC values will go from 0-127, different channels, for each device.

Set up three knobs, type PC, on the correct midi channel for the devices.

Make one momentary button & one toggle button.

Make a picker, change type to presets, accept the default 12, assign the three knobs above as subcontrols. (If you don't have the extra features pack, use a knob here - but you really want a picker.) In the relationships tab, choose momentary button above for the store button, the toggle as recall.

Save and exit design

Adjust the knobs for your first desired preset. Press store. Repeat for additional presets.

When the recall button is on, a preset is automatically recalled when you change the picker. You normally want it on, unless you are trying to copy one patch to another preset.

But you wanted five buttons - we can add those.

Make a momentary button, send on only, assign as a supercontrol of the picker, select options as supercontrol - force not picker. Make similar four times = desired five buttons.

Set their midi on values as follows: 1 = 0, 2 = 12, 3 = 23, 4 = 35, 5 = 46

(These are the correct numbers for 12 position picker/preset, the remaining numbers for seven more buttons would be 58, 69, 81, 92, 104, 115 & 127)

So you should have five quick access buttons, and you can change and restore the program changes as desired.

Can MDP receive and respond to computer keyboard keystrokes?

Several programmable switch devices output computer keyboard keystrokes, such as Ctrl-Q or Ctrl-R. This includes X-keys and Elgato Stream Deck. Is there a way to use a button to detect keystrokes rather than midi? If not, can Stream Byter detect and convert keystrokes to midi?

Better Approach to 'more' issue in iPadOS than MDP 2.267

The latest version of MDP (2.267] provides 2 methods to access the 'more' menu with the latest version of iPadOS. It solves the issue in PLAY mode, but not DESIGN.

There is a better approach! The touch range to activate Apple's 3 dots is narrow enough at the top such that if 'more' is selected by touching just below the letters 'more' (in the black area) it will drop down. It may take a little practice, but it works in both Play and Design mode.

also, you maybe know if this is possible . . . i use a couple of iPad instruments in my set; it’s audio out thru iConnectMIDI2+ as part of an aggregate device with my soundcard (KMI Kmix) which is superior to coming out of the headphone jack. Is it possible to use MidiDesigner as a controller but sometimes switch to iPad instruments? and back?

If you are connecting the iPad via the iConnect, then you have to use separate USB MIDI and an audio cable - the iConnect does not do audio over its USB. Or connect the iPad through your computer. Been since earlier in the year since I was connected that way, but believe that you can get both audio and midi over the usb direct to a Mac. For some reason, you have to enable the MIDI connection in the audio settings. I liked the iConnect, but now have several devices that need both audio and midi over usb, so I now send everything direct to the computer to mix, so I have retired mine. Need to get it up on Reverb sometime.

(Unless there has been some software update to the iConnect since I retired mine - have not checked.)

BTW, since you now have a Q&A account, it makes my life easier if you ask the questions there. Then the answers become available to everyone, and you also get answers from the community, instead of waiting for me to remember and check the inbox.

Use the right pedalboard.

On the right pedalboard, put a jump to page button control for each page that you want to recall.

On the left page, make a momentary super control that activates the page jump button on the right pedalboard.

The control settings for these buttons do not matter, since they will not be sending midi. But remember to turn off midi receive on both the page jump and super control buttons - unless you want them to react to inbound midi.

Yes, that approach does work. The synth I'm working with has a few odd design features. Exposing a -99 to +99 range as a 127 MIDI CC is odd to my way of thinking. I can't get at the value +1, for instance. I will be feeding this back to them.

But it still also seems odd that I can choose '0' in MD's Default Value chooser, yet when I 'Apply' and it returns to the main editor it snaps back to '1'. I think it should retain the choice I've made.

Looking at section 8.1.1 of the GR5 manual, looks like they behave as any assignable controller. You can map them to any midi message desired. Ensure the selected message is not used elsewhere in your rig.

8.1.1 Setting up External MIDI Controllers
Each of your device’s controls (knobs, fader, etc.) can be configured via the Controller list. You only need to do this once, as the Controller list is global for all presets. Make sure you are on the Controller tab of the Options page in the SideKick. Follow these steps to add a new MIDI controller:
1. Click on the Add Controller button on the bottom of the SideKick to add a new controller entry. Rename it by double-clicking on the white headline bar.
2. To link a (physical) device to the controller entry, click on the Learn button and operate the knob (fader, etc.) you want to link briefly. Its MIDI code will be shown in the box right of the button and the Learn button will pop out. It is also possible to assign keyboard shortcuts the same way!

2. While dragging, the mouse pointer gives you feedback as to where you can create an assignment by showing a small arrow. A No Entry sign is shown where elements cannot be assigned.

So to control from a MDP2 layout, make two momentary buttons. Give each a unique midi cc, select send on only. Then map these to the desired functions as above.

Layouts are saved from More / Options / Save Layout. Commit changes just seems to clear the undo memory, it does not save the layout. If you have not gone too far, the autosave layout might still have your changes.

Two possible setups:

Supercontrol (group buttons) -> Four radio buttons. The buttons are set with the appropriate CC & midi "on" value. In supercontrol options, select buttons send on only.

Supercontrol (groups buttons) -> Four radio buttons -> control2. In this case, control2 is set with the appropriate CC, midi min and max of 0-3. In this case, the radio buttons have to be scaled to operate control2. Button 0 = 0, Button 1 = 48, Button 2 = 96, Button 3 = 127.

Ok, after a reboot of my iPad, I was finally able to load the layout. (Prolly inflated the download count by about 10 by now)

As suspected, the designer hard coded the midi channel (1) into each control. Your option is to edit each control to change it to channel 16 - see picture below

The quick and easy way is to use Streambyter rules to intercept and change the outbound message. (You will need the optional streambyter rules IAP.) Looks like the designer used only control and program changes, so we need two translations:

This outbound rule will change control and program changes from channel 1 to channel 16: (B_ is control changes, C_ is program changes, _0 is channel 1, _F is channel 16)

B0 = BF

C0 = CF

Type the two lines in the More / Config / Connections / Output Rules Streambyter box, press install.

I did not see that the layout received any info from the pedal, but if it does, you need the reverse rules on inbound:

BF = B0

CF = C0

My one worry is that your FB post yesterday showed some channel 5 data, and I don't see any channel 5 controls in the layout.

The short of it is that we tested downloading 2.131 on an iPad 2 (iOS 9) when 2.140 released. So it works. The question is how to purchase it.

Here are some known workarounds:

If you have another iOS device on the same App Store account that runs a modern version of iOS, that's easiest. Buy on the newer device, then download on the older device
Otherwise, you need to gift it to yourself (confirmed by a user, this actually works!) or have someone to gift it to you.

Does your layout use the extra features pack? If so, a user will only see design locked until they purchase the extra features.

Otherwise, there is no Permanent layout lock.

Named tick list midi values 1-16 are standard 0-15, then 16 - 31 become values 128 - 142, etc.

Copy that list for all the controls that need it.

Now you have got me in trouble with my wife, who is always going to be wondering where her iPad has gone.

Yes, and works especially well with Hauptwerk. The picture below shows HW on the Mac screen, and two identical layouts - with all controls sync'd. HW is explicitly designed to keep multiple input and output panels correctly sync'd. Using the echoing functions of HW, no matter where I make a change, all three displays stay sync'd up. Even if you are doing separate left and right jambs, there are likely some couplers, etc., that need to be sync'd between.

I do need to change one line in my St Annes instructions - for this to work, always suppress output (echo) must be deselected. We do want HW to echo any received command to ensure all displays are sync'd.

And like my other post - I recommend that MD just do the display and controls - let HW handle the heavy lifting of combinations. It has mind numbing set of combination controls. I stopped with controls for 35 in my layout for exactly that reason.

And you have got me energized to update my St Annes layout with more functionality.

Why not just Hauptwerk handle the combos? Map the MD combo buttons to the HW combo. This allows dynamic configuration of the stops from MD, with setter, etc. Also, this keeps all HW and MD displays aligned. Press a combo either in HW or MD, all displays react the same and have consistent status.

If you hard code the stops in a MD layout, you have to remap every time you want to reprogram a combo.

You can see an example in the St Annes layout.

How can a Midi Program change trigger a note on/off

Hi all,

This seemed simple but I have not found the solution yet.

With an ART X-15 floor controller I try to trigger a midi note on/off.

So: PC1 —> note 1:C0 on/off

I manage to trigger the note but it stays ON and I need it to shut off after triggering. Workarounds till now: a normal supercontrol knob, configured for PC1-10, that ‘grabs’ the footcontroller pc’s and controls a buttongroup of 10 momentary buttons that send 10 notes.

When replicating the pedalboard in mdp2 with 10 buttons (10 hardware controller switches) all 10 mididesigner buttons light up after pressing 1 hardware switch.
Any thought/insights are appreciated,

Yes. I use the XITE-1 MIDI / Audio interface. Built in 12 channel 4 AUX Mixer is totally automated. It also sends MIDI Out back to my iPad Pro.
