MIDI Designer doesn't detect USB connection from Casio XW-P1 to iPad 4

Question

I connect the ipad4 to Casio XW p1 with "lightning camera connecting cable" ( which works will all kinds of sound cards, midi controllers, etc on this iPad) and no hardware is detected or connection established by the software.

ive tried both the pro and XW versions of the midi designer. Same.

ive tried any possible combination of settings for the USB send/receive options on the XW.

the midi designer software detects immediately the hardware and connects to the XW when I use irig MIDI in conjunction with two midi cables which I hook onto the XW, thus bypassing the USB use.

i got strong impression that I should use USB?

it bends my imagination how come there is not a single instruction (video or scheme) on how to connect the Casio XW with Midi designer, neither here nor on the Casio site. There is one video on how to fiddle with parameters once the connection established.

Hi Rosssin and thanks for your question. Sorry you were unable to find any docs on MIDI Designer XW and connecting. When we've resolved this in comments, we'll place the answer here so future users can benefit from your search.

You can definitely connect via the iRig (as you've done) and via the iPad camera connection kit. The first question is whether you are 100% positive you are using an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter (the official one)?

We've heard positive reports from users with the newer Lightning to USB Camera Adapter -- http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter -- and we haven't heard of any issues with the XW.

Don't buy one, but if you have a older 30-pin iPad Camera Connection Kit + Lightning Adapter, that works without issues.

Also note: using USB is not preferable to using the iRig + MIDI cables... MIDI Designer runs over CoreMIDI and transmits exactly the same information. You should not see increased latency over the iRig.

The Lightning adapter is for sure the good, certified one-with the others (that only externally look like it) hardware just don't connect, they are only good for battery charging.
But that's ok, since you told me that we don't gain any speed with USB I'll stick to the irig/midi cables.
