Custom Display labels for values

Question

One thing I love about my Mackie C4 is that I can give it a listing per control of custom labels to display on the interface while it actually sends the underlying numerical value.  This is particularly handy for editing synths and things.  For instance, you generally can select modulation sources via CC or sysex.  In this case, have to remember that "0" is LFO1, "1" is Envelope A, "2" is keyboard velocity, etc. is really tedious and not particularly helpful.  I would like to be able to provide strings for each value to display on the controls.

Right now we don't provide this, and the best we do is button groups (or multiswitch), see here.

The initial idea, and I still think it's not a bad one, was to eventually let you hide the buttons and show the labels on the knob/slider somehow. I still think that this idea is viable.

You might say, "wow that is cumbersome" but it's creating button groups that is cumbersome. So if I solve that problem, then this idea could fly too.
