Let's take this offline to email, and then I'll post an answer here when we've gotten it working (and we will, I think). Can you send me a mail to support [at] mididesigner.com, please?
My first question would be: how are the NRPN messages specified in the synth manual? As 176 99 0? Assuming the 99 is decimal, we put "99 in hex" (no quotes) into Google and it gives us a 63. Then we put "63 0" into the top box of the MIDI Byte Calculator (http://mididesigner.com/help/midi-byte-calculator/?midi_bytes=63+0). This produces the number 12672. Now we use that value as the MAX midi value for, say, an NRPN momentary button.

Now if that works, I can explain all of this better and post an answer here.

THANKS for your question and for checking out MIDI Designer!
I'll probably hide this question in a bit: the dialog with the user has fed into the Shruthi-1 layout, which we'll see in a bit. Thanks Paul!
bumping this question.

i cannot for the life of me figure out how this stuff works, and when i downloaded the template to see if it worked, none of it did anything for me.

i DO have the controls that accept CC working, so i know it's not a connection issue.

any input would be greatly appreciated.
Hi @deadbeatsynesthete,

1) "when I downloaded the template to see if it worked"... what layout are you referring to?
2) I'm glad to help out with any and all NRPN issues, and we've handled a lot of them and all successfully (so far, but I'm always curious to find limitations of MIDI Designer). Get in touch via another comment here, another question on this site, or via the contact form at http://mididesigner.com/contact.

Thanks as always for your question and for using MIDI Designer!

Best,
Dan
I don't think it's a limitation of midi designer, i just think it is user error on my part haha

i am referring to the layout found here: http://mididesigner.com/qa/184/call-for-layouts-mutable-instruments-shruthi-1 which on the current build of MD / the most recent firmware of the shruthi does not work, at least in my experience.

CC data is working fine and the template is great, but i'm really interested in controlling parameters that are only accessible via NRPN. perhaps you can make more sense of the documentation than i can, found here: http://mutable-instruments.net/shruthi1/manual#param

i think it may have something to do with how MD handles both NRPN MSB/LSB as well as Data Entry MSB/LSB...i don't think i understand where the values fit.

hope that makes sense and thanks for the help!
Thanks. I worked extensively with the author of the Shruthi layout to help him understand NRPNs (I learned a lot, too). Please get in touch via the contact form and we can work through some examples. Once you've seen two or three, you'll be able to infer the rest. Then, potentially, you could upload a fixed layout here... or we could figure out why the current layout is not working for you.

Thanks!
Dan
