Roland have recently announced the RD-08 - which appears to be just a variant of the RD-88, so this layout should support the RD-08 (you only have 100 vs 400 scenes)

The RD-88 is a powerful, complex sound tool, packing all the power of ZEN-Core, trapped behind a small screen.  With Midi Designer Pro 2, the RD-88 can be freed from its small screen limitations.  The Mixer and FX Overview show most settings impacting your sound in single view, providing a visual method for customizing your sound.

To connect directly from the iPad you will need either a USB B - USB C cable (newer iPads, including Pros), or a USB B - Lightning cable (older iPads).  With the USB - B (square) connection, these are commonly referred to as printer cables.

If the RD-88 midi driver (System / General / Midi Driver) is set to "vendor", select "generic" for midi driver, save the setting, and reboot the RD-88.
